Lyndale Walk-A-Thon

Jeanne Wiener

The Lyndale Walkers season kickoff BBQ will be on Sunday May 1st at 4 pm in the alley behind 3328 Blaisdell South. This year’s event will be hosted by Ann Leitel and Jeanne Wiener. It’s a potluck, so please bring a dish to share and wear walking shoes.

The walking season kickoff will include Lyndale Residents walking in shifts from Sunday May 1 through Saturday May 7th. The first shift starts at 6 am and the last shift at 10 pm each day. The Lyndale Walkers are a citizen Patrol that walks around the Lyndale Neighborhood to provide a consistent presence and eyes on the street, to deter crime, also to watch for livability issues, chat with neighbors, represent the neighborhood with a positive attitude, and at times help LNA flyer for other neighborhood events.

Luther Krueger the Originator of the Lyndale Walkers says this: “I didn’t know the neighborhood I’d moved into until I started walking it, delivering the neighborhood paper in 1990. I don’t think we would’ve bought our house in Lyndale if we had not grown to appreciate the sturdy housing stock, which you can not see driving through. And the best way to get to know your neighbors is to go for a walk.”

Lt. John Kelly of the 5th Precinct says this: “The value of having peopled who live in the neighborhood walking is that it shows that they care and want people in their community to know that.” When people show that they care about their neighborhood, crooks are less likely to conduct their activity. The Lyndale Walkers are a good way to contribute to your community. Be visible and let everyone around know that you care about where you live.

Amy Lavender, Crime Prevention Specialist says this: “The Lyndale Walkers is a fantastic group that has a lot to offer, more eyes on the street to report suspicious activity and to promote crime prevention activities, a unique opportunity to get to know your neighbors. A great exercise. Who doesn’t want a chance to get out and enjoy the city?”

So fellow walkers and new walkers please join us, there is no quick fix, it needs repetition, repetition, repetition!
