What are some unique objects in your home that best represent you, your story, and your community?
This is the question people are asking themselves, and their neighbors, this summer as part of the Curiosities of Lyndale Box Wrap Project.
Curiosities of Lyndale is an innovative community art project brought to you by the Lyndale Neighborhood Association, artist Carly Schmitt, and the Youth Farm and Market Project. At neighborhood events throughout July, Schmitt will be taking pictures of objects that answer the question above, and are meaningful to community members. From these photographs we will design anti-graffiti utility box wraps that will become a modern-day interpretation of a 15th Century Curiosity Cabinet.
Curiosity Cabinets were the 15th century precursor to the modern day museum. These cabinets were designed to house artifacts from distant lands, or foreign cultures, before photography became a common practice. This project will create a unique opportunity to bring Lyndale community members together and help them develop a deeper understanding of each other and their histories.
The box wraps will all be similar in form, each looking like a cabinet, but unique in that each box will display different artifacts from the people living in that particular area. This project will showcase the diversity of the Lyndale neighborhood and create an outdoor walking museum in which the stories, values, and interests of local residents will be on display.
In order for this project to be truly successful we need your help, and your stuff! We're looking for participants to bring meaningful objects, ideally no bigger than a shoe box, to neighborhood gatherings throughout July.
Here are some upcoming events:
- Sunday, July 8th as a part of the KidPower Great Gathering and Jon and Lisa Lewis House
- Tuesday, July 17th from 7:00to 8:00 pmhosted by Cynthia Launer
- Wednesday, July 18th hosted by Youth Farm
We will be posting additional dates, times, and events locations at www.lyndale.org/curiosity as they get scheduled. As well as information for how you can participate if you can not make a gathering. We ask that you please find a date that works for you and make it a point to bring those meaningful objects with you to be photographed at these fun neighborhood events!
Ask your neighborhood Block Club leader, visit our websitewww.lyndale.org/curiosity, or contact Mark at mark@lyndale.org / 612.824.9402 x 16 for more information about how you and your family can get involved in this unique community opportunity.
