Should Minneapolis residents be able to build additional, small dwellings on their property?

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) also-called "granny flats" or "mother-in-law apartments" are already allowed in some parts of the city including the North Phillips Overlay District, which covers the Ventura Village neighborhood, and parts of Phillips West and East Phillips.  Advocates want the policy to extend city-wide and say the extra dwellings create more housing options for aging families.

It’s almost here!  All along Nicollet Avenue you can feel the energy starting to build, as we get closer and closer to this year’s Nicollet Open Streets.  So set the day aside to explore a hidden part of Minneapolis’s main street as it continues to transform from a long neglected corridor to one of the most vibrant stretches in the city.

HOLA AREPA is a new Latin restaurant located at 3501 Nicollet Avenue in the Lyndale Neighborhood. The owners, Christina Nguyen and Birk Grudem, started Hola Arepa as a food truck selling arepas (a Venezuelan cornmeal griddle cake sandwich stuffed with meats, cheeses, veggies and salsas) in the streets of Minneapolis. After running the food truck for three years, they opened their first brick & mortar location in early May and are excited to see their dreams of opening a physical location becoming a reality.

Join us on Thursday, September 18th at Painter Park to say thank you to Roy Woodstrom who recently retired as the Community Librarian at Hosmer Library.  Roy has been a long-term fixture in the community and a big reason for library’s success.

LNA has an incredible opportunity to be awarded support for a new community garden and Lyndale’s Food Share program through the Wedge’s WedgeShare program.  Founded in 1997, the Wedge Board of Directors created the charitable giving program based on Cooperative principle #7, Concern for Community.  Presently the Wedge makes WedgeShare grants in amounts up to but not exceeding $10,000 to select organizations that are working to create a sustainable future.

This October Lyndale wraps up another season of the Lyndale Food Share. Over the course of the summer, we collected right around 100 pounds of produce grown in our neighborhood! We distributed the produce at the Lyndale Community Dinner at Zion Lutheran to over twenty families, including more than forty children.

I want to extend a special thanks to all of the volunteers who grew vegetables to donate, spent time distributing the products, wrote and shared recipes, and helped make the distribution happen.

It’s been a very busy summer around the Lyndale Community Center.  In the past few months we’ve had to say good-bye to several long-time LNA staff members as they move across the country and on to the next steps in their careers.  It’s also given us the opportunity to welcome a number of new people to the team.
