Nicollet Construction Updates

NEW ANTICIPATED START DATE MAY 1, weather permitting.  Tomorrow, April 24th, installation of the advance signage will begin.

UP-COMING MEETINGS

Stakeholder construction updates

Public Works will hold construction update meetings. These meetings are to provide an opportunity to learn what is happening with the construction and share potential issues and concerns.   At this point, meetings will be scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Thursday of May and June. We may adjust the frequency of the meetings based on needs and meeting attendance.

Where: Butter Bakery Café

3700 Nicollet Ave

When: 9:00 am

We wanted to extend a big thank you to everyone who participated in Live Nicollet over the past eight months.  All together we awarded 4,500 points, which included 625 trips to buy things at participating businesses.

We would also like to say congratulations to Todd Grosz who was the big Live Nicollet winner in our efforts to help support businesses during the reconstruction of Nicollet Avenue.  Todd far out distanced the competition and ended up with 1,325 points, that’s over 250 Live Nicollet activities, in what was an amazing demonstration of commitment to the local business community.

After years in the making and a very long summer of construction, Lyndale finally has a brand new Nicollet Avenue.  The reconstruction of Nicollet Avenue has been a major priority for LNA the past few years.  Prior to this year’s construction, the stretch of Nicollet from Lake street to 36th street hadn’t been repaved since 1977, hadn’t had major work since 1954 when they paved over the pavers and street car tracks, which meant the foundation of the street was getting close to 100 years old, making this a forgotten part of Minneapolis.

Phase 3 work is still progressing.

The schedule for this week, weather permitting,

Thomas and Sons is working on the south half of the 36th St and Nicollet Ave intersection. They expect to follow the following schedule, weather dependent:

Phase 3 (35th to 36th St) is progressing very quickly.  Thomas and Sons has completed the pavement removals and most of the storm sewer work.

Thomas and Son’s plan, as it stands now, weather permitting, is to:

·        Pour the concrete bus pads at 35th St (SE corner) Friday (Oct 5th)

·        Work Saturday (October 6th) to gravel and final grade in preparation of the first layer of asphalt between 35th and 36th

·        Place the first layer of asphalt between 35th St and 36th St on Monday (October 8th)

Even as I spent the last couple weeks watching and listening to the big machines rip up the 3500 block of Nicollet, I could see the end of this year’s construction coming into sight.

The Phase 3 walk-around is scheduled for Tuesday, September 18, 2012.  Meet at the Lyndale Neighborhood office at 11am if you’d like to join us.

With the reconstruction of Nicollet Avenue in full swing, we though it would be fun to take a look back at Nicollet Avenue’s history through photos.

As you’re reading this the reconstruction of Nicollet Avenue is moving right along.  It’s been a long summer, but even with the extra dose of heat this year’s construction is only a couple of weeks behind the original schedule.

The current plan for construction is that the second segment will be completed within the first two weeks of September.  As of Labor Day the construction team was still laying asphalt on the section between 32nd and 34th.

Thomas and Sons is continuing work on Nicollet Avenue and forming and pouring sidewalks between 34th St and 35th St. The underground utility work is almost completed and the final grading can continue north. Paving north of 34th St could begin late next week.

The intersections of 32nd, 33rd, and 34th are closed. They will minimize the parking restrictions as much as possible outside of the construction zone. The restrictions are necessary to allow for equipment maneuvering and to maintain safety for the public as well as the construction workers. All businesses will be open.
